Background & Objectives
West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Limited (WBIDC) is the nodal agency of the State Government for the development of medium and large scale industries in the state of West Bengal. WBIDC also facilitates the timely development and maintenance of infrastructure for growth of industries in the state of West Bengal.
The handicrafts sector is one of the most vital sectors of our economy, both for generating employment as well as earning foreign exchange for the country. Zari is also an important part of this sector. The history of Zari Industry dates back to past several centuries. West Bengal has a rich and continuing tradition of craftsmanship. Over the years the industry has faced numerous problems including the threat of extinction due to its unorganized nature. The industry still survives due to the strong will of the crafts men. The industry is mainly concentrated in Panchla & Jagatballabhpur blocks of the Howrah District.
Keeping this in view, the State Government has taken up a plan to develop this Industry so that the actual workers who are the real architects of the Industry get due support for economic upliftment.

WBIDC has conceived of a cluster of Zari units with all necessary infrastructure support. For the purpose an already constructed three storied building located just beside Food Park at Sankrail, Howrah, West Bengal has been identified as the proposed Zari Hub Centre.
The ZARI HUB at Sankrail, Howrah was inaugurated by Smt. Mamata Banerjee, Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal on 4th February 2012 in presence of Shri Partha Chatterjee, Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge, Commerce & Industries and Information Technology Departments and other dignitaries.
Sankrail is an important industrial area in Howrah district, and the Zari Hub is:
Ideally located at a motorable distance of 28 km from Kolkata on the newly widened 4 lane NH6.
Nearest port – Kolkata and also quite close to the port town of Haldia
Nearest Airport – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata
