Dr. Sabyasachi Sen, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Industries Department, Government of West Bengal made an exploratory visit to Malaysia during 29th March to 1st April, 2009 to assess the possibility of Malaysian automobile and auto component companies investing in West Bengal and particularly, in the Industrial Park and SEZ complex being set up in Guptamani area of Kharagpur by Bengal Integrated Auto Industrial Park Pvt. Ltd (BIAIPPL), a joint venture between WBIDC and SREI. Dr. Sen was accompanied by Mr. Indranil Dasgupta, CEO, BIAIPPL.
The delegation met with representatives of various government organizations in Malaysia including Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA), Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and some of the leading auto and auto component manufacturing companies like Proton, Perodua, Bufori, DRB HICOM etc.
Significant interest was observed among Malaysian automobile and auto component companies in the Indian market and many of the companies were found at various stages of strategizing an India entry. Introducing West Bengal as a prospective destination for setting up manufacturing facilities in India, the delegation informed the companies of the advantages of West Bengal, the different incentives the State had to offer as well as the facilities provided by BIAIPPL in Guptamani.
As a first step towards investigating the possibility of recommending Malaysian companies to set up shop in the state, MITI agreed to instruct MIDA for investigating the possibility of sending a Fact Finding Mission to West Bengal later this year.
The delegation also met representatives of Ranhill, a premier Malaysian engineering and construction company. |
